Like many of the world's email innovators, we were saddened to learn that Ray Tomlinson, the inventor of the email, has passed away. Join Pepipost in celebrating his life and world-changing accomplishments!

The American computer scientist was integral in developing communication as we know it today, and in selecting the internationally understood "@" symbol as an email designator. The New York native attended the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and MIT in the 1960s. He was fascinated early on by the advent of network computers and their still untested potential. Upon graduating, his interest and tech prowess manifested as an early form of email. Personal computers were not common at the time, and he created network email "mostly because it seemed like a neat idea."

His email invention was recognized over the course of his life with the George R. Stibitz Computer Pioneer Award from the American Computer Museum; a Webby Award from the International Academy of Digital Arts and Science; an Innovation Award from Discover Magazine; and the Eduard-Rhein Cultural Award. And of course, he wins our accolades too.

Email has brought the world together in new ways, making communication across borders and oceans easier than ever. Since its advent in 1971, email has continued to evolve through the innovative visions of creative minds inspired by Tomlinson's brilliance.

Ray Tomlinson was a true trailblazer who changed the world and set a new course for tech innovation. We will never forget how he transformed the world, and the way generation after generation does business. His vision and courage to step out of the conventional and redefine communication continues to inspire future generations of email trailblazers, like us.
